In Vivo Reflectance Confocal Microscopy (RCM) is based on optical confocal imaging.
It uses reflected light from a low-energy laser source focused on specific layers of the skin to generate images.

Non-invasive imaging of skin lesions

RCM produces images with different brightness levels depending on refractive index differences within skin microstructures.

Due to its cross-sectional imaging capability, it allows layer-by-layer scanning from superficial to deeper skin layers — similar to CT — which is why it is often called “Skin CT.”

Principle of RCM Imaging

RCM uses optical scanning confocal technology:

A low-energy laser focuses on specific skin layers
Light is backscattered from tissue structures
Signal passes through a pinhole to the detector

Only light from the focal plane is captured → creates a clear image
Out-of-focus light is rejected

Image contrast depends on refractive index differences between tissues
